Backing Up Your Database

Need to backup your database because you’re switching hosts and would want to carry over you old posts and pages to your new home? Or you’re scared WordPress will accidentally delete your files, like some bloggers had experienced? Here’s how:

  1. Log in to your WordPress account.
  2. In the Tools Menu, click Export.
  3. Click Download Export File.

This will generate a .xml file that you can save to your computer. The file will contain all posts, pages, users and comments. It doesn’t include the plugins that you have installed so if you’re importing the file to your new WordPress blog, you may have to install the plugins again.

Now you are ready to import the database to your new blog. To do this:

  1. Log in to your new WordPress blog.
  2. In the Tools Menu, click Import.
  3. Click WordPress. That is if the file you’re going to import is originally from a WordPress blog. You can also import files to WordPress that were originally from another blogging system, like Livejournal, Blogger, Movable Type, and etc.
  4. Now upload the file.
  5. After doing so, it may have to ask you to create a new user or you can map it to the existing one. If your current user is Senyth and the imported files contain the user ‘cnit’, all posts, pages and comments will be displayed as “posted by Senyth” if you map it to the existing user. This comes handy when you don’t want to create another user. You can always create a new one, so that means you will have two users in the database, given that you only have one user before importing.

I hope this tutorial was clear enough. If you’re having trouble, feel free to ask or contact me. :)
